Allison Loconto

Allison Marie Loconto holds a PhD in Sociology from Michigan State University and a MA in International Affairs and Development from the American University in Washington, DC. She is a Senior Research Scientist at the French National Institute for Research on Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE) and Deputy Director of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Science, Innovation and Society (LISIS). She is also a member of the Doctoral Faculty of the Department of agrarian, food and agro-environmental sciences (DiSAAA) at the University of Pisa (Italy). She has a PhD in Sociology from

Dr. Loconto is an Executive Committee member of the International Sociological Association (ISA) and a member of the Multi-stakeholder Advisory Committee (MAC) of the Sustainable Food Systems Programme of the One Planet Network (UN Environment). A former Fulbright Fellow (2009-2010) and EU Marie-Curie Fellow (2018), she was also a Science, Technology and Society Fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (2018) and a Visiting Scientist at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (2013-2017).

Her research programme focuses on the governance of transitions to sustainable food systems, specifically on the metrics, models, standards, and systems of certification that are part of emerging institutional innovations. Her focus of analysis is on how the responsibility for sustainability in consumption and production is assumed and shared by different actors in food systems at different scales. She has conducted fieldwork on 5 continents but focuses most of her research on food systems in Africa and Latin America. She is on the editorial boards of the International Journal of the Sociology of Agriculture and Food and Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems: Social Movements, Institutions, and Governance.
