Née à Montréal (Canada) et d’origine palestinienne-libanaise, je suis doctorante du
LISIS depuis décembre 2022, sous la direction de Dr. Allison Loconto et Dr. Yuna Chiffoleau
(UMR Innovation, Montpellier). Ma recherche doctorale en sociologie vise à étudier,
comprendre et participer à un processus multi-acteurs de construction de valeur(s) autour de
la biodiversité cultivée, et comment ces diverses valeurs se traduisent dans la configuration
d’un marché. Plus précisément, je me concentre sur deux variétés de légumineuses dans deux
contextes différents en France. Ce projet de thèse s’inscrit plus largement dans un projet
européen intitulé DIVINFOOD (N° d’agrément 101000383). Pour mener mon projet de thèse,
je suis aussi récipiendaire d’une bourse de doctorat du Conseil de Recherches en Sciences
Humaines (CRSH) du Canada.Titulaire d’une licence en sociologie de l’Université Concordia (Montréal), et suite à diverses expériences de recherche en sociologie et en santé publique, d’enseignement, ainsi une d’études indépendantes en maraichage biologique urbain, j’ai poursuivi un Master’s of Arts in Food Studies à l’Université Américaine de Rome (UAR) en Italie. Dans ce cadre, j’ai mené une recherche de terrain qualitative dans deux territoires du sud de l’Italie. J’ai aussi fait un
stage auprès de l’organisme Rete Semi Rurali, l’équivalent du Réseau des Semences
Paysannes en Italie. Ces diverses expériences ont renforcé d’autant plus mon intérêt pour le
sujet des semences, ainsi que pour la compréhension des pratiques et des valeurs tels que
revendiqués par des acteurs locaux dans le monde de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation.Contrairement à une approche qui réduirait les valeurs à un seul prisme d’acteur(s), ce
travail s’inscrit dans la nécessité de reconnaitre et mettre en avant la diversité des valeurs
autour de la biodiversité cultivée telles que réellement vécues par les acteurs de terrain et en
prenant en compte la spécificité du contexte dans lequel ces acteurs se situent. Il s’agit surtout
de créer des espaces où ces valeurs peuvent être mieux exprimées et prises en compte dans
le processus de construction de marché.

Born in Montreal (Canada) and of Palestinian-Lebanese origin, I began my PhD at
LISIS in December 2022, under the supervision of Dr. Allison Loconto and Dr. Yuna Chiffoleau
(UMR Innovation, Montpellier). My doctoral research in sociology aims to study, understand
and participate in a multi-actor process of value(s) construction around cultivated biodiversity,
and how these diverse values translate into a market configuration. More specifically, I am
focusing on two varieties of legumes in two different contexts in France. This thesis project is
embedded in a European project entitled DIVINFOOD (grant N°101000383). I am also the
award recipient of a doctoral fellowship granted by the Social Sciences and Humanities
Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).With a degree in sociology from Concordia University (Montreal), and following various experiences in sociology and public health research, in teaching, and in independent studies in urban organic market gardening, I pursued a Master’s of Arts in Food Studies at the American University of Rome (UAR) in Italy. As part of this degree, I conducted qualitative field
research in two areas of southern Italy. I also interned with Rete Semi Rurali, Italy’s equivalent
of the french Réseau des Semences Paysannes. These various experiences further
strengthened my interest in the subject of seeds, as well as in understanding the practices,
orientations and values claimed by local actors in the realm of food and agriculture.Contrary to an approach that would reduce values to a single prism of actor(s), this
work is in line with the need to recognize and highlight the diversity of values around cultivated
biodiversity as actually lived and experienced by actors on the field whilst taking into account
the specificity of the context in which these actors are situated. The purpose is to create spaces
where these values can better be expressed and taken into account in the market-building
process.
