Title: Beef politics in Brazil
Abstract: It is currently widespread in the scientific literature that food systems present major flaws regarding climate change and human health. Derived from this understanding, the necessity for significant changes is gaining momentum. However, there are several barriers to such changes. This paper analyses one of the most influential: power. To do so, it examines the main agendas and political leverage of four groups of actors in the beef chain in Brazil: cattle ranchers, meatpacking industries, retailers and banks. The research is based on corporate documents and 25 interviews with leaders of the groups. The results show expressive heterogeneity concerning agendas and power.
Bio: A political anthropologist, Caio Pompeia is associated with the Post-Doctoral Program in Social Anthropology at the University of São Paulo (USP), where he researches food systems politics and its relations to climate, indigenous and food matters. He holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and has been a visiting fellow at Harvard University. He is the author of the book Formação Política do Agronegócio (Elefante, 2021), and his research has been published in HAU: Journal of Ethnographic Theory, Mana and Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais, among other journals. As an academic visitor in the University of Oxford, Caio is researching power in the food systems.
